Ninth Ward

Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes is a Coretta Scott King award winner that discusses the tragedies that so many people faced after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina and the breaking of the levees.
The main character is 12 year old Lanesha.  She is a special child who is being raised in New Orleans by  Mama Ya-Ya.  Lanesha's mother died during childbirth and resides in the house with  Lanesha and Mama Ya-Ya.  Lanesha is teased and pretty much an outcast in school because she can see ghosts and because of who is raising her.  Hurricane Katrina devestates the city of New Orleans and with the help of a dyeing Mama Ya-Ya and her mother she is able to overcome unbearable circumstances.
Ninth Ward takes the reader into the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and the breaking of the levees that caused so much destruction and death.
This was a good book, but personally for me I found it strange that Lanesha could see and talk to ghosts.  I did find it interesting and sad at how the flood waters crept into the houses and rose until it covered roof tops and caused so much destruction.  I can't imagine what the people of New Orleans went through those horrible weeks in 2005.
