The Firefly Letters

Three women who live very different lives are brought together in Cuba by circumstances that change their lives. In this true account Cecelia is a slave who knows how to speak English and is befriended by Frederika, a woman who has traveled to Cuba.  Then there is Elena, a rich Cuban girl who has been brought up to keep quiet and do what she is told by her father.  Frederika learns of the tragedy that many slaves endure and advocates and even secretly helps them secure their freedom.  This book tells of the bond that forms between three women who are trapped intheir own version of slavery and the risks each one will take to ensure freedom for someone else.
Being a woman, I can't imagine having to marry some gross man at the age of 14 or being sold by my own father for a cow.  I am so grateful to women like Frederika.
