Kakapo Rescue Saving the World's Strangest Parrot

This non- fiction book by Sy Montgomery and photographed by Nic Bishop cronicles the journey to save one very rare and unique bird.  Kakapo parrots are flightless birds on Codfish Island off the coast of New Zealand.  These birds were once very abundant, but of course, with humans infiringing on their territory and the introduction of predators the Kakapo's numbers were reduced to near extinction.  There are only 87 Kakapo birds in existance right now and scientists do not know when these birds breed or how often they lay eggs.  Sy Montgomery and a group of volunteers traveled to the island to New Zealand to study and assist with the protection of these rare birds.  Since the birds are nocturnal and their feathers camoflauge so well into the forage it is very difficult to find them.  Lisa Flossie, Sirocco, and Richard Henry are some of the kakapo's being studied on the island. The volunteers had to endure unforgiving weather and sleepless nights to be able to study these rare birds.
I was unaware of the existance of these magnificent birds.  They are playful and very curious which caused the decline of their population.  The photographs are breathtaking and beautifully chronicle the events of the study. I am so glad to see that the kakapo are being preserved for the future.  The author added a  P.S. at the end of the book and of the 5 eggs that were discovered and incubated while they were on the island, 4 of the chicks are healthy and thriving bringing the population up to 91 kakapo parrots in existance.
